Reading: Our reading weeks will be a little off for the next 3 weeks. We will begin on a Monday but we have some testing with iReady so our weeks will not end on Fridays for the month of January. Behavior:
Our classroom created a new behavior program for the new year. Students will be able to earn money by just finishing their center work on time, bringing their folders to school, completing homework, and making good choices all day. They can also lose money by not making good choices such as: touching others, playing in class, or not completing work. As the students earn money, they can buy coupons which they may use at any time. We will have a “bank” set up once a week on Fridays where the kids can count out their money and buy coupons. This will help enforce our math money standards. Also, I asked “them” what coupons they wanted to earn, so they all had an incentive as a class to motivate great behavior! So, if you start hearing about “coupons” and they tell you they earned a “cuddly friend” coupon it would be a fact!!! 😊 Once the program is in full force, I already secured a volunteer who will come in and be the banker. 😊 I will keep you posted on how it is going!!
January 8th - Students and teachers return.
January 10th -begin iReady testing for reading/math.
January 12th-Report Cards are Issued.
January 16th-Martin Luther King Holiday NO SCHOOL

We are continuing to work on place value in unit 3. We have had some difficult lessons. The kids have really responded well using whiteboards, markers, and manipulatives that represent “towers of tens” and cubes that represent the ones place. We have spent multiple days on certain lessons to ensure everyone has a deeper understanding of place value. We will continue to work with place value this week and test on October 10th for this unit.
Science: We will be learning about the “Parts of the Plant” with this unit. The fun will be when the kids get to plant. This is always a fun project. I will be taking pictures of them and putting their faces on a plastic cup. The kids will plant grass. When the grass grows it looks like it is coming from the top of their heads on their cups. It is really a cute activity!! The grass grows quickly, and the kids get to see the plant is a living thing, and the basic needs that we will provide for the plant.
Social Studies: This week we will be learning all about Monuments.

Math: We started unit 3 in math in the middle of the week. This unit is about place value. During this unit we will be using a lot of manipulatives such as cubes, and towers of tens, and ones blocks. It is important for the kids to have a visual and work hands on when learning place value. Students will be working whole group with me, working independently, going to math centers, and some will be working with me during small group for extra help to understand that day’s lesson. We will continue to use exit tickets so I can check for understanding. This will serve as a tool to drive my instruction for those that will need further attention. Other students will be participating in math center work.
Science-We will continue to work on basic needs of living things. I bought 2 plants earlier in the week and we are taking care of one plant. WE NAMED OUR PLANTS!! "Bluey" gets all the basic needs she needs but "BINGO" does not. The kids are loving everything about this!! We are talking to it, watering it, allowing it to get sun. Our other plant (poor Bingo) is sitting in the dark, and we are not giving it attention. The idea is for the kids to see that living things do have “basic” needs. 😊
Social Studies- Students will be learning about timelines. A project will be sent home on Monday. All students will complete a timeline and present it to the class for a grade. This is ALWAYS a fun project for the kids and their families.

Math: - For the next 2 weeks we will be working on lessons on place value. Some of the lessons are more difficult than others. As you know we are beginning to use exit tickets that the students do on their own independently.
Right now all students are completing the colored papers with me and NOT INDEPENDENTLY. When I give them the exit ticket, I read the questions, but they must answer it on their own. You may see them come home but sometimes the lessons can be so difficult for them will not complete it right away. I will be spending extra time this week having the kids work with manipulatives which will help with understanding of tens and ones, different ways to write 2 digit numbers, and drawing towers of tens and one’s cubes.
Please go over the lessons at home. This will help with understanding.
Science—We will be learning about basic needs. Through observation, recognize that all plants and animals, including humans, need the basic necessities of air, water, food, and space.
Social Studies- Students will continue to work on learning about responsibility. We will also talk about voting, laws, and the Presidents.
September 18th-Interims go home and will be posted on FOCUS. Interims are a snapshot of where your child is at halfway through the nine weeks. There will be a code at the top of the Interim, so you have a better understanding of what each letter means. If you have any questions, please reach out to me via email.
September 29th-Field trip slips will go home. Each class can only bring 2 chaperones. I always put names in the bowl and pick them in front of the students so they can see how it works and know that it is being done fair.

Math: We finished up Unit 6 on 2D and 3D shapes on Tuesday. We started Unit 2 this week and will continue to work on it all next week. This unit consists of patterns. We will be exploring number lines, 120 chart, and skip counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s. As I said last week *Skip counting by 2’s, 5’s, or 10’s is a great skill to practice while driving in the car. The whole family can participate. 😊
Also, exit tickets will be going home starting tomorrow. These are 3 questions the students complete to check to see if they understood the concept that was taught for that lesson. The idea behind the exit ticket is to see who understood the lesson and those who did not. Those students who struggled will then get pulled for small group and have the lesson retaught to them while the others are at math centers. This will give me more time with the students who are struggling as this series moves quickly. Please look for these exit tickets in their folders. It will be a great tool for you to use at home to reinforce the lessons that I am teaching here at school.
Science- We are finishing up living and nonliving things this week.
Social Studies-We will be learning about Rights and Responsibilities.

The students learned how to do homework this week. We completed it in class each day; If you have any questions, please email me.
We are also going to begin using a “paper” booklet this week for reading. They will be taking their paper booklet home at the end of each unit. Each unit is 3 weeks long. You may not see some of their daily work since it is in the booklet, and we will be using it each day. They will be completing activities using their booklet daily. I don’t have extra booklets so that is why they will not go home until the end of the unit. If they can’t get their assignment done here in class, I will make a copy of it so they can complete it at home and return it the next day.
Now that testing and reviewing kindergarten skills are complete, we are really going to be digging deep into the reading curriculum. It will be important that your child works on their high frequency words throughout this school year. Those words are located in the back of their binder. They should know how to pronounce them and spell them. Also, it is important that your child is reading TO YOU each night. Have your child learn the first 100 fry words that are located on my website. Scroll down to the bottom and you can see they have many lists for them to master.
Unit 1 week 1 Reading:

The kids are really adjusting well to 1st grade. They realized early on that this is “a lot” of work. They have been troopers and trying their best.
Reading:
Students are learning how to make transitions in the classroom. They will be introduced to workstations each day. They will continue to practice letter recognition with handwriting practice. It is important that the time is taken for them to work on handwriting daily. They will begin to be split into reading groups soon. We have a lot to do and reading gains to be made.
I am testing students to see where they will be placed for reading groups for small group instruction. They will begin to come see me soon and learn how to transition to this while also getting work completed that is assigned to them during literacy center time.
Math: We worked last week on “math talks” just being curious, wondering, and exploring.
We completed a diagnostic math test on counting, adding, math vocabulary such as “greater” “less” along with attempting to write numbers up to 120. This was a great way to see how high they could write their numbers, but also how many of them are reversing their numbers at this time. Students will be put into math groups. They will go to workstations each day. Other students may get pulled for further small group instruction of concepts we are learning during that time so some students who need extra help may not get to a math center which is O.K. Instruction on what is being taught that day is more important. Centers reinforce their math skills. Teacher small group instruction allows them to eventually transition to this once they understand math concepts.
This week we will be working on 2D and 3D shapes. Students are still getting exposed to manipulatives and how to care for them in the classroom. “THEY ARE TOOLS NOT TOYS” is something I reiterate every day to them.
Science- We are working on What is a Scientist this next week.
Social Studies we are working on being responsible.
Homework will be starting soon. (After Labor Day) The kids will get a binder and a planner to write their homework in each day. The first week I will be doing homework in class with them and they will bring it home so you can also see the process.
I want to thank you all for the donations. The kids love getting treats and have been working hard. We are learning to be bucket fillers and not bucket dippers.

Welcome Back!
Mrs. LaSala’s 1st Grade Class
Welcome-I am so excited to begin the 2023-2024 school year with all of your children. In 1st grade your child will be working hard learning to become a great reader and will be reading daily and discussing what he/she is reading along with incorporating science and social studies concepts and quality reading strategies. Math is also a very important part of 1st grade. Your child will be working in cooperative groups and problem solving on a daily basis. This is going to be a great year!
Homework- Our homework program will begin after Labor Day. Students will complete reading or math homework 4 days a week.
Attendance-It is important for your child to be on time when arriving at school every day. If your child is absent, please send in a written note.
Tardies- We have a policy set in place that states if your child is tardy multiple times a phone call will be made to remind you to get your child to school on time. We begin instruction at 8:00 a.m. When students are tardy it often begins their day with frustration for them since they begin their day behind with their morning work.
Snack- It is strongly suggested that your child bring a small snack to school each day. Please be sure that this snack has your child’s name on it and can be easily opened by your child. I do not keep any snacks here at school. It is your responsibility to pack a snack for your child each day. This may consist of fruits, vegetables, crackers, cheese, yogurt, nuts, granola bars, etc.
NO CANDY, SODA, OR CHOCOLATE BARS DURING SNACK TIME.
NO JUICE BOXES are permitted during snack time. Your child may bring in a water bottle each day.
Toys-In first grade we do NOT have show and tell. All toys and any small items need to remain at home.
Medications- All medications need to be left with our school nurse. If you have any concerns please contact our school nurse.
Dismissal-You must have a written note or email me if you are changing the way your child goes home. If you call my classroom and I do not answer DO NOT leave a message for dismissal there is a good possibility I will not see the message in time.
Activity-This year we will have a five day rotation for activity. It is VERY important that your child wears the appropriate shoes for P.E. and supplemental P.E. If your child does not wear the appropriate shoes, he/she can NOT participate in P.E. or play and run during supplemental P.E. I suggest for my girls who enjoy wearing sandals to school to keep an old pair of sneakers in their cubby so she will never have to miss physical exercise.
WE ARE A SPLIT CLASS THIS YEAR!
I WILL SEND HOME A SCHEDULE EACH NINE WEEKS SO YOU KNOW WHAT ACTIVITY YOUR CHILD WILL BE ATTENDING EACH DAY.
Website-Please check my website for updated newsletters and activities that are happening here at Manatee Elementary School. [email protected]
More information will follow soon. Please do not hesitate to contact me.
